What geographical areas does City Home Tutors cover?

We provide tutors throughout London.

Is there a registration fee?

No, registering with City Home Tutors is free.

How often should lessons take place?

The majority of our customers request tuition for one or two hours per week. To ensure continuity of teaching we suggest students have at least one hourly lesson per week.

Must I request a minimum number of lessons?

There is no minimum. You should notify your tutor and call us when you feel that you no longer require lessons.

How can I check the tutor is who they say they are?

Our thorough application process includes academic, ID, reference and CRB checks. Unlike many home tuition agencies we insist on meeting all of our tutors face-to-face to assess suitability for home tuition work and to check photographic ID. We will call you to confirm the name of your allocated tutor and at the first lesson the tutor will introduce themselves and present photographic ID (either a passport or driving license).

Do parents/guardians need to be in the house when tuition takes place?

For students under 18, a responsible adult must be present in the house.

Can the tutor teach different age groups or levels at the same time?

We recommend that for small group tuition, students are all of a similar academic level in the chosen subject. Students are usually in the same year group at school/college/university.

Can I change the tutor allocated?

Yes. Although we strive to ensure tutors and students are well matched, if for any reason you wish to change your allocated City Home Tutor, please contact us so that a replacement tutor can be arranged.

How is the tutor paid?

You will need to pay the tutor at the end of each lesson, either in cash or by cheque. The price paid includes the agency fee; the tutor is responsible for sending this fee to us. By the 3rd week of tuition you will be asked to pay your tutor one hour’s worth of lessons in advance. We will call you before the 3rd lesson is due to confirm that you wish to continue with tuition and to remind you to pay your tutor in advance from the 3rd lesson onwards.

What happens if I need to cancel a scheduled lesson?

We ask for at least 24 hours notice. You should contact your tutor in the first instance to request that the lesson be rearranged. If you are unable to give 24 hours notice your tutor may still be able to rearrange at short notice; we expect our tutors to be flexible and recognise that you may very occasionally need to rearrange lessons at short notice due to illness and other emergencies.  However, if less than 12 hours notice is given and the tutor is unable to reschedule for that week, the tutor is entitled to retain the lesson fee (- all fees are payable one week in advance by the 3rd lesson). Please contact us if you are unable to contact your tutor in advance.

What happens if my tutor cancels a scheduled lesson?

Tutors are expected to give at least 24 hours notice and to rearrange the lesson to take place as soon as is mutually convenient. Occasionally your tutor may need to cancel with less notice, due to illness or emergencies. In this instance we will endeavour to send a replacement tutor to cover the lesson (at your request); you pay the tutor in the usual way at the end of the lesson and your regular tutor will return the following week. If this is not possible your tutor should arrange for a replacement lesson as soon as is mutually convenient.
